A 500,000-Mile Long Solar Flare Exploded From The Sun

Last Friday, Aug. 31, there was a massive explosion on the surface of the sun.  

NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory captured the flare, caused by the collapse of a filament , which stretched more than 500,000 miles into space.   

The explosion also resulted in some spectacular auroras on Earth a few days later.
